Do Patio Privacy Screens Block Heat and Wind?

Do Patio Privacy Screens Block Heat and Wind?

Yes, patio privacy screens block the low afternoon sun that sneaks in under a patio cover, they knock down the hot wind and blowing dust we get in the West Valley, and they give you a side of the patio the neighbors cannot see into. They do not turn a patio into an air-conditioned room, and they will not fix a patio that has no roof at all. But paired with a solid cover, a screen is the piece that makes the patio usable from about 3 p.m. on.

We have been putting shade on Arizona patios for more than 20 years, and privacy screens are the most under-asked-about product we sell. Most people call about a cover, and then once the cover is up they notice the sun is still coming in sideways. Here is what screens do and do not do.

The Sideways Sun Problem

A patio cover handles the sun when it is overhead. By late afternoon the sun is low in the west, and it slides right in under the edge of the roof. On a west- or southwest-facing patio that means the back half of the patio is shaded and the front half is an oven. We wrote about this in what the best patio cover is for a west-facing yard, and the short version is that the roof alone cannot solve a low sun angle. Something vertical has to.

That is what a privacy screen is: a vertical shade panel mounted on the open side of the patio. Ours are made from materials that reflect sunlight and resist fading and tearing, and they come in enough colors and patterns to match the house instead of looking like a tarp.

What Screens Do for Heat

A screen does three things for comfort:

• It blocks direct sun on your skin, furniture and sliding door, which is most of what makes a patio feel hot.

• It shades the patio slab and the house wall, so they stop storing heat and radiating it back at you after sunset.

• It cuts the hot wind that blows across the patio on summer afternoons, which feels like a hair dryer when the air is over 105 degrees.

What it does not do is lower the actual air temperature very much. Air still moves through and around it, and that is on purpose. A screen that sealed the patio would trap heat. The goal is shade and a windbreak with airflow, not a closed box.

What Screens Do for Wind and Dust

Monsoon season brings the dust storms, but the daily afternoon gusts in Buckeye, Goodyear and Surprise are what wear people out. A screen on the windward side takes the edge off the gust, keeps dust from blasting across the table, and keeps the cushions where you left them. A screen is not a wall, so it will not stop a true haboob, but on a normal breezy evening it is the difference between eating outside and going in.

If you want a true solid barrier, the better product is one of our privacy walls, which are rigid panels rather than screen material. Walls block more wind and more view, but they also block more airflow, so we usually mix the two depending on which side of the patio faces what.

A Backyard in Goodyear

We did a solid-roof cover for a couple in Goodyear whose patio faced due west over a block wall. The cover helped at noon, but by 4 p.m. the sun was under the roof and across the whole slab, and the neighbor's second-story window looked right down into their seating area. We added a privacy screen along the west side and a shorter one on the south corner. They told us the patio went from a place they used in October to a place they used after work in June. The screens also solved the window problem without building a taller wall.

The Honest Counterpoint

Screens are not for every patio. If your patio has no cover, start with the patio cover, because a screen alone shades a sliver and leaves the rest in full sun. If your view is the reason you bought the house, a screen on that side defeats the purpose, so we put it on the side that faces the neighbor instead. And HOAs sometimes have rules about screen height and color, which we help you check before you order.

Screens also need a sound structure to mount to. On an older cover with weak posts we will tell you to fix the cover first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can patio privacy screens be removed or retracted?

Some of our screen options retract or come down for the winter, and others are fixed. Which one fits depends on your patio and how much you want to adjust it through the year.

Will a privacy screen make my patio darker?

It shades the side it is on, but screen material lets light and air through, so the patio does not feel closed in the way a solid wall does.

Do I need HOA approval for a patio privacy screen?

Many Valley HOAs treat screens like any exterior change, so it is smart to ask. We handle the paperwork with you as part of the estimate.
